What does persimmon taste like?

I want to try one and they grow them at the Asian market where I live but production has slowed a lot because of winter (or so they say) so prices have gone up 5 times on them (they were charging 3 for 5 during the summer but now they're 15 for 5). If you were to compare them to something else what would you pick, please help because I don't want to spend almost 20 quid and have to throw out perfectly good food because I don't like them.
