Tranmission problem? 1990 F150 5.0 v8 automatic overdrive?

Recently my truck has started to shake around 45 to 50 mph and seems to have trouble slipping into gear. Then as I get to 60 to 70 mph it does the same thing. When i push the overdrive on it seems to relieve the problem a little bit. Also when I accelerate hard I hear a loud clicking noise that may be coming from my drive line. I also noted the temperature goes up a little while the gears are slipping. I dont have the exact temp. Do I have a serious problem or is there a simple check I can do before taking this vehicle to a pro? Thanks!
