How do I feed my red-spotted newt and earthworm or cricket?

I am trying to figure out how to feed my red-spotted newts, I have had them for 2 weeks and am unsure if they have actually eaten anything. I have tried live crickets, frozen brine shrimp, and raw hamburger, and am in the process of trying small earthworms. My problem with the crickets is the keep going in the water and drowning. I really don't know much about my newts yet but would like to also know what kind of set-up(living space) they require. Right now I have them in a five gallon tank with a rock just above the waterline for a dry surface for them. I want them to live awhile.
