Were Malcolm X's actions and crimes justified?

Malcolm X paid for his crimes in prison. His speeches after joining the Nation of Islam, whether you find them hateful, racist or whatever, where exercising freedom of speech. After his break from the Nation of Islam he embraced universal freedom for all oppressed people black, brown, white etc. There is no record of him committing a crime after his conversion to Islam. Some just spread that because when he said 'By any means necessary' it scared the crap out of people.
