I need help with a book name.?

In the 4th grade a read a book about an orphan who wanted to learn about his parents and history. he goes on a trip to a place where travelers came to america, and falls asleep in a closet. he wakes up in italy with 3 boys. i remember one of the boys dieing, i think his name was salvador or somehing with an s. I think thats how the story went, but pleaseeeeeeee help. i loved this book so much! im in the 7th grade now and want to read it again but cant think of what it was called. ITS DRIVING ME INSANE! ha well thanks for your time and please tell me someone knows. FINGERS CROSSED:)
